3 SECRET PLACES TO ADMIRE THE FOLIAGE IN TUSCANY
When we say "foliage", the great Canadian or American forests immediately come to mind. Also Tuscany gifts us with an incredible foliage: a chromatic spectacle ranging from yellow to orange, from red to burnished brown. A colorful blanket that between October and November, the autumn season, transforms and makes our countryside magical.
If you are staying in Forte dei Marmi, you can easily reach some of the most beautiful places to admire the foliage in Tuscany, as the Garfagnana and the Apuan Alps.
There are many places to go for a walk to enjoy the colors of autumn, but when some guests ask me where to go, I recommend those I love the most. These are my "secret" places, the wildest and off the beaten path at this time of year.
1. Colonnata
We have already talked about Colonnata and its famous lardo. We did not wrote that this cute village carved inside the mountains of the Apuan Alps is particularly fascinating in autumn, when yellow and orange glisten in contrast to the white marble cascades of the quarries that surround it, offering a stunning foliage.
The distance from Forte dei Marmi is about 40 minutes by car.
2. The Wood of Fatonero
The Apuan Alps are home to another magical place: the Wood of Fatonero, a mysterious and fascinating place located on the Mount Fiocca. According to the local legends, here you could meet the Linchetto, the most famous spiteful elf of the Lucca area. But do not worry, the Linchetto rarely shows itself and in autumn it is worth getting up here, because the Fatonero beeches are completely covered in gold and create a truly memorable foliage.
The distance from Forte dei Marmi is about 55 minutes by car.
3. Isola Santa (Holy Island)
This delightful medieval village is located in the town of Careggine, on the Apuan Alps, resting on the banks of a small artificial lake and nestled among the peaks of the Garfagnana, with very few houses and an ancient church. The inhabitants probably are no more than thirty, which is why absolute silence reigns here. The foliage that colors the mountains around and the shores of the lake gives this place a surreal atmosphere and a unique sight in Tuscany.
The distance from Forte dei Marmi is about 50 minutes by car.
Many believe that autumn is the least cheerful season of the year. On the contrary, I think it is the period where nature offers the most beautiful and varied colors, the last surprise before the winter stillness. An outdoor trip in contact with nature reconciles us with it and reminds us how many incredible places do exist in the world and how much they can appear different depending on the season in which you visit them.
