Not everyone knows that Versilia was the house of one of the greatest international opera music writers: Giacomo Puccini. Although he was born in Lucca, Puccini spent most of his life in his villa in Torre del Lago, just half an hour's drive from Forte dei Marmi.
When Puccini arrived here around 1890 it was love at first sight: Torre del Lago became his home but above all, this became the place from which he drew inspiration. It is no coincidence that today the place is called Torre del Lago Puccini.
In a letter addressed to a friend before he died, he wrote that he liked to go to the lake to hunt the snipe by boat and to enjoy the view. "But one day I would like to go here in front of the lake and listen to my opera outdoor," he concluded.
So it was: Torre del Lago has collected and made treasure of the master's dream, and today hundreds of people from all over the world in summer go in front of the lake, to listen to the operas of Puccini.
To celebrate Puccini, Torre del Lago has been organizing for over sixty years the Puccini Festival, which includes a calendar of the most beautiful works of the maestro, staged in front of Lake Massaciuccoli by an ever-changing international cast.
Listening to the Boheme or Madama Butterfly here, outdoors, with a view of the lake, is quite another thing than watching opera in the theater.
